PHILOSOPHY
The Haan philosophy was established right at the beginning with Hanenhof Vineyards being managed as a true wine estate
Providing the best possible conditions in both vineyard and winery has been the key to success to which must be added the clear understanding of wine excellence. As such then the Haan Wines show distinct varietal Character and classical style.
In keeping with the Haan philosophy there has come the ability to blend Classic varieties to achieve a wine that shows the strength and grace typical of upper echelon wine.
VITICULTURE
The vines that these grapes come from are 16 years old, and planted on sandy loam with a 2 metre clay base.
The vines are trellised on a single wire with two foliage wires to enhance fruit maturity. They are minimal irrigated and cropped at a level of 2 ½ tones per acre.
WINEMAKING
These varieties were fermented separately in open fermenters, which were hand plunged and left on skins for 7 days to allow for maximum extraction of flavours. These wines were matured in 20% new French and American oak to ensure complexity with the balance in 3 year old French oak to maintain varietal fruit lift. After 8 months the barrels were selected for this range and combined in tank and refilled back into old oak for a further 3 months to allow for the integration of both varieties. This was not filtered prior to bottling to maintain the maximum amount of fruit flavours.
TASTING NOTES
A densely concentrated nose of deep red fruits, aniseed and sweet cashew complemented by enticing Cabernet aromas of violets, blackberries and dried herbs. These flavours continue to the generous palate that is rich with fruit intensity, subtle integrated oak and balanced with long fine grained tannins adding a seamless structure to the wine.
This iconic combination gives a rich backbone to the wine and is finished off graciously with velvet smooth tannins.
