VineyardThe 19-hectare vineyard surrounding the Hanenhof Estate consists mainly of the sandy loam soils that dominate the Barossa Valley floor. These soils have proven excellent for producing some rich, luscious Shiraz and Cabernets, varieties that have made the Barossa famous the world over.
Most of the vines are on a simple vertical trellis system with moving wires to lift the foliage and expose the fruit to the sun for full development of flavour and character. The Haan philosophy is based on 'best practice' which means that the vineyard is run on a 'minimal input' system, offering considerable environmental protection. Chemical use is kept to an absolute minimum, as is irrigation and ground disturbance. This commitment to diligent natural resource management ensure that the vineyard has a long term sustainable future. Already this philosophy of providing the best possible conditions in the vineyard has been rewarded with some excellent wines from the property. Our StoryWe travelled the world in search of the ultimate home for us, a place that would fulfil our dream of being makers of very special, unique wine. Many places charmed us -- Cyprus, France, Portugal, Spain, Madeira, New Zealand, Victoria, Tasmania, Margaret River and the Hunter Valley -- but we kept returning to the Barossa Valley, drawn by all it had to offer:
Upon seeing our 45 acre (18 hectare) vineyard, initially purchased in 1853 by George Friedrich Schmidt for one pound an acre, we knew we had discovered the vineyard and home of our dream. The blend of the old classic Barossa feel and subtle Mediterranean influences in our home is a philosophy carried over to our wines. As we hoped, our wines are being enjoyed as symbols of the Barossa's simple elegance - a reflection of truly special wine traditions. The wines are available in selected restaurants and retail outlets, as well as for purchase by mail order.(All orders are subject to availability.) Please, have a look at our wines released so far, but keep in touch as there is always something happening at the winery. Click on News for the latest information and developments or email us with any questions, so we can keep in touch and let you know what's happening, how the vines and vintage are going and when the new releases are available. The Hanenhof Estate also grows some exceptional Merlot, together with a small amount of Malbec and Petit Verdot. In the white varieties Semillon and Viognier are also grown on the estate. All of these varieties have benefited from the excellent attention to detail of the Haan's vineyard manager, Robert Seelander.
