2006 Hanenhof Shiraz

PHILOSOPHY

The Haan philosophy was established right at the beginning with Hanenhof Vineyards being managed as a true wine estate.

Providing the best possible conditions in both vineyard and winery has been the key to success to which must be added the clear understanding of wine excellence. As such then the Haan wines show distinct varietal character and classical style.

In keeping with the Haan philosophy there has come the ability to blend classic varieties to achieve a wine that shows the strength and grace typical of upper echelon wine.

WINEMAKING

The fruit for this wine comes from three different clones of Shiraz, all of which are co-fermented to ensure the maximum concentration of varietal characters. The ferment is taken over a 7 day period and is pressed off with the combination of both free run and pressed wine. Continuing the Haan philosophy for excellence in varietal character, this wine is aged in barrels which are 2-3 years old, with only 20% being new wood, which is a blend of French and American oak.

THE VINEYARD

The vines that these grapes come from are 14 years old, planted on sandy loam with a 2 metre clay base.

The vines are trellised on a single wire with two foliage wires to enhance fruit maturity. They are minimal irrigated and cropped at a level of 3½ tonnes per acre.

The grapes are allowed to reach a maturity of 14.5°Be before harvesting.

THE WINE

This wine exhibits a deep rich brick red colour. There is an elegant lifted aroma of vanilla and dark chocolate, which is further enhanced by boiled fruit cake aromas from the Shiraz fruit. This array of flavours is further complexed by the fleshy fruit as it fills the mouth and is drawn through the palate, finishing with long, refined tannins. This is a well balanced wine showing strong varietal and regional characters which are evident on both the nose and palate. The wine shows definition and characters associated with a premium Barossa Shiraz.
