Haan Viognier is bottled poetry
2008 Hanenhof Viognier
PHILOSOPHY
The Haan philosophy of producing the finest examples of super premium Barossa table wines is clearly expressed in excellence and limited production of the seven wines made from the estate-grown grapes. Where possible, the opportunity to develop new styles from lesser known varieties such as Viognier is approached with great dedication and care. In this way the consumer is assured of great wines of excellence, quality and interest.
VITICULTURE
The Viognier vines are 15 years old, grown on sandy loam with a 2 metre clay base. The vines are on a single wire trellis with two foliage wires, but are allowed to over-hang to protect most of the fruit from sunlight exposure. Opposite to the Viogner Prestige, the fruit for this wine has seen exposure to sunlight which allows for development of a golden berry and intense fruit character.
STYLE
This wine is very dominate in tropical fruit aromas and balanced well with hints of citrus and florals. The deep colour gives great indication of the richness of this wine, and there is an explosion of fruit flavours from the front to the end of the palate. These fruit flavours are complexed by an intense honeysuckle character which persists throughout the wine. A crisp acidity perfectly finishes off this wine.
WINEMAKING
The fruit is hand picked after the Viogner Prestige has been harvested and undergoes the whole bunch pressing to minimise phenolics. Fermentation is maintained at 18-20°C, and is completed in two weeks. The wine is then allowed to rest on yeast lees for four months with stirring occurring on a two weekly basis.
