Haan Viognier is bottled poetry
2005 Hanenhof Viognier
PHILOSOPHY
The Hanenhof Viognier 2005 reinforces the philosophy of making super premium quality wines from only estate grown grapes. The understanding, care, and attention to style and detail are all of the highest order and show clearly in this most rare of white wines.
VITICULTURE
First Viognier plantings in the Haan vineyard started in 1997 and have continued until now there is 3.6 hectares planted.
Viogner is quite rare in Australia and for that matter it is also rare around the world. This planting was one of the first on the Barossa floor, and from what we see in the wine, produces excellent varietal characters.
The particular grapes that make the Hanenhof Viognier 2005 are picked from the outer canopy and show an intense lift in varietal character and definition not seen in other wines.
This technique of separation within the canopy has produced some amazing differences that have shown different appeal to different consumers.
STYLE
Intense straw-like colour, rich tropical fruits with subtle dried quince and pear aromas. An initial rewarding palate of apricots and pears, flowing through a cinnamon-like spice finish. A medium weighted palate is balanced by savoury tannin structure finish. The overall power of this wine indicates a difference between the inner and outer canopy, and the use of screw cap closures ensures the longevity and excellence as the wine bottle ages.
WINEMAKING
The fruit is processed using very gentle techniques and maximum gas cover to preserve varietal characters. Fermentation temperature is controlled between 14-16°C and is completed within 21 days. After fermentation the wine is left on its fine lees with weekly stirring to ensure the development of viscosity to increase the mouthfeel of the wine.
