A case of Haan Wines can work more miracles
than a church full of saints
2006 Haan Wilhelmus
PHILOSOPHY
This wine is based on the old wine saying that “the blend is greater than any of its parts”. Using five classic varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon 47%, Merlot 18%, Cabernet Franc 16%, Malbec 11%, Petit Verdot 8%) adds even greater complexity and potential to age superbly. The style and overall character of the wine is of the highest order.
WINEMAKING
Each variety is picked at its own distinct maturity so maximising the flavour. Individual oak selection is tailored for each variety and matured as separate parcels. A detailed blending exercise is undertaken to bring about the desired complexity in the finished, blended wine.
THE VINEYARD
The vineyard is located in the middle of the Barossa on deep, sandy loam over red friable clay. The crop level is maintained below 4 tonnes per acre by a strict pruning regime and selected bunch thinning at verasion,
THE WINE
This wine is perfection in a glass. Aromas of plum, cassis, dark chocolate and rich leafiness from the five varieties are complexed with perfumed oak tones to give a powerful intensity to this blend. The palate is full of upfront rich berry-like fruits with herbal and violet flavours not apparent in the aroma. These abundant flavours are balanced by perfectly rounded, silky tannins, giving the wine immense longevity.
The 2006 vintage was a great year for Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, with ideal ripening conditions. Combined with the outstanding Merlot, this vintage will rival the 2002 as the world’s best red blend.
This wine is aged in selected French oak barriques for 24 months, which imparts a fine grain tannin structure and length.
To fully appreciate this wine, we recommend that it be decanted 3 to 4 hours before serving.
